SAMPLE LESSON...DYNAMIC COMPRESSION
What is is and how to use it.
Dynamic compression is the manipulation of how loud a piece of audio is. While it's not the sexiest of effects like a vocoder or multi-tap delay, I have found that after listening to many people's home recordings, that it is probably the most misunderstood of the effects.
When you start to understand how controlling the dynamic range of the signal is so important in how good your final mix sounds, your recordings will go from amateur to professional.

Here are some of the typical parameters that you will find on a compressor.
- Threshold: The point at which every signal that fall outside it will be compressed.
- Ratio: The factor that any signal ABOVE the threshold will be reduced.
- Makeup Gain: The amount of dB that the entire processed signal will be amplified by.
- Attack: How fast the compressor will react to the sound after the threshold has been reached.
- Release: How fast the compressor will stop compressing after the signal falls below the threshold.
